Understanding which electricity network your business is connected to can help make sense of the network charges on your bill.
Across the National Electricity Market, electricity is delivered through local distribution networks. These networks own, operate and maintain the poles, wires and infrastructure that carry electricity to homes and businesses. Your electricity retailer manages your plan and billing, but your distributor is determined by your physical location. (Australian Energy Regulator (AER))
That means two businesses with similar usage can still have different network charges if they are located in different distribution areas. Network tariffs are charged by distributors to retailers and then passed through to customers as part of their electricity bill. These tariffs help recover the cost of building, operating and maintaining the electricity network. (Australian Energy Regulator (AER))
The maps below provide a general guide to the major electricity distribution areas across the National Electricity Market, including New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.
Victoria
Victoria has several electricity distribution networks, including AusNet, CitiPower, Jemena, Powercor and United Energy. These networks cover different parts of metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and outer areas. A business’s physical location determines which distributor it is connected to.

Queensland
Queensland is mainly serviced by Energex and Ergon Energy. Energex generally covers South East Queensland, while Ergon Energy services many regional and remote areas. Because Queensland covers a large and diverse geography, network costs and tariff structures can vary depending on where a business is located.

New South Wales
New South Wales has multiple electricity distribution networks, including Essential Energy, Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy. These networks service different geographic areas across the state, from metropolitan Sydney through to regional and rural NSW. Businesses in different NSW network areas may be assigned different tariffs and network charge structures.

South Australia
South Australia’s electricity distribution network is operated by SA Power Networks. Businesses across the state are connected through this network, with tariff assignment depending on usage profile, demand and site characteristics.

Tasmania
Tasmania’s electricity distribution network is operated by TasNetworks. TasNetworks manages the poles and wires that deliver electricity to Tasmanian homes and businesses across the state.
