Gympie Mitre 10 is a cornerstone of the Sunshine Mitre 10 group – a JV store as part of the Mitre 10 corporate portfolio. Sunshine Mitre 10 has been trading for more than 100 years and is the largest timber supplier in the Sunshine Coast region. With over 15 locations, Sunshine Mitre 10 is a recognisable brand for builders, renovators, and the general public. Starting as Lanhams in 1910, the group has grown in size and stature and has pursued an aggressive expansion into 2017.

With this expansion in infrastructure and building space has come soaring energy costs that peaked at close to $10,000 per month at the Monkland store. Through a detailed analysis of the store’s energy usage, Choice Energy identified the need for a turnkey 100kW solar system in conjunction with a 125kVar power factor correction unit to reduce the retail, network, market operator, and environmental charges on the power account.

The 100kW system went live in November 2017 and will be used to full effect over the Queensland summer where the power of air conditioning the 4,500 square store will now be provided free from the roof.  Total savings on the installation of the power factor and solar equipment are in excess of $1.3 million over the lifetime of the installation, leading to a fixed cost of $0.06/kWh over the next 25 years.
